I had a conversation with a friend yesterday, and followed jackalopekid’s twitter updates on this as well, and this really got me thinking.
My personal view on this is NO.
Why I say so, is that there are plenty of ‘Christian’ artists that do not promote their music as Christian music. Examples of these are Lifehouse, and Niemand (for the South Africans). These artists believe their music must be a ministry, and by only performing as Christian musicians they will, in general, only reach people that is already saved.
Now, I personally do mainly listen to Christian music myself, but I do listen to plenty of secular music as well, and really enjoy it. As a musician I get inspired by bands like Dave Matthews Band and the likes, and would probably always have them in my collection, even though worship music is now at the top end of my playlist.
What is your view on this, as I think this is a great topic to debate…
Over the last couple of years the make-up of my music collection has changed significantly. At some stage only about 10% of my CD's were Christian. Now my collection contains probably around 60% Christian music (I had a lot of fun buying new CD's
).
I have felt that there were certain CD's that the Lord wasn't pleased with, and I had to throw them away, but I don't feel that I am not allowed to listen to secular music at all. I think that listening to music can be compared to reading a book. Sometimes we read Christian literature, and other times we read secular literature just to relax.
I do think, though, that it's important to listen to music that glorifies the Lord often (and more than other music). It helps me to focus on Him even when I'm driving or doing chores around the house. We need to fill our minds with Him, and what better way than to listen to music that glorifies Him.
I only listen 2 music that glorify my LORD, sing HIS praises or Whorship HIM. This is my personal feeling and my standard.
my wife do not feel the same and that’s fine, we respect each other.
Riana Nel (Nianel’s sister) sings a song “i can never ever sing unless it’s for my KING” that’s how i feel about listening.
Danie, luckily, through our Lord, we are able to be free in choice, and that is GREAT!!!
Just a comment on Riana Nel, is that she is also now doing a 'secular' CD, to reach out to people that doesn't listen to Christian music yet.
Please understand, that I am not trying to antagonise you, or anybody else for that matter, but only trying to get to a point, where I, as a musician, am comfortable in understanding these subtle differences. It is all good and well to only do Christian music, as it is safe, but then, does that not go against everything that I am trying to do with Unsafe Challenge?
